Salish Sea rowers can now report cetacean sighting in real time, and help large vessels navigate better to avoid whale collisions and save the lives of our Salish Sea friends. Download the free app and start reporting in real time.
In the next few weeks, a collision avoidance system, called the WhaleReport Alert System (WRAS) will be launched and used by commercial vessels (tugs, BC Ferries, cruise ships, tankers, freighters, etc). WRAS will take real-time sightings, reported via the Whale Report App and transmit the location of these cetaceans to these large vessels so that they can take mitigation measures to avoid collision and disturbance. WRAS is currently in the beta-testing stages with an expected launch date of late-September.
Report your sightings in real time using the WhaleReport App! It’s free for download for apple and android smartphones. The more real-time sightings reported, the better chance we have of protecting these vulnerable animals from the effects of vessel traffic.
